Delve into the "Anatomy of School Improvement"

More than 50 Corporate and Education Leaders Experience Hands-on School Improvement at Council for Educational Change Event at North Miami Middle

What: The Anatomy of School Improvement
Where: North Miami Middle School, 13105 NE 7 Ave., North Miami 33161
When: January 17, 2007, 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (lunch provided)

The "want and need to" are not enough to improve student achievement. It's the all important "how to" that gets it done.

"We have more than 50 business leaders working directly with schools through Council programs, and they keep asking us to show them how school improvement happens," explained Council for Educational Change Board Chair and CEO Steve Saiontz. "That is what this event is all about."

The event offers a rare glimpse and a different lens—CEO perspective--into the process of school improvement, demonstrated by the school's instructional team, led by Principal Arnold Montgomery. The agenda has these elements:

  1. DISCOVER: delve into data and see it linked to strategies specifically designed for staff to deliver improved instruction and meet student achievement goals
  2. CONNECT: tour the school and classrooms to see the strategies in action
  3. PROCESS: network with business and education leaders to discuss promising practices that improve achievement and the impact of the experience

More than 20 corporate leaders, including Council Board and PASS© and Executive PASS© CEO's who have collectively infused more than $2 million into local school improvement will attend. Montgomery participates in the Executive PASS program with Andy Ansin, VP of WSVN TV Channel 7. Ansin mentors Montgomery and works on increasing student achievement, involving the 7 news team at the school.

Miami-Dade district leadership will also attend. Executive PASS was started by the Council and Supt. Dr. Rudy Crew and is now at nine Miami-Dade schools. Representatives from local Mayors' offices and the St. Petersburg's Mayor's Office (PASS partner) with an interest in scaling-up business partnerships focused on school improvement will attend.

Business, education and government leaders planning to attend from Miami-Dade and around the state include:

Steve Saiontz, Dr. Elaine Liftin, Jeffrey Miller, Sue Miller, Charles Cobb, Dr. Robert Graham, Carlos Hechavarria, Michael Scheck, Dr. Paul Zimmerman, Edward T. Foote, Scott Curtis, Andrew Ansin, Art Kobacher, Bob Moss, Steve Wasserman, Suzanna Valdez, Claire Pink, Lily Pardo, Dr. Sarah Lind, Daiqueline Pino, David Concepcion, Gail Eggeman, Rhonda Williams, and Richard M. Vidal

Council for Educational Change, Florida's Educational Think Tank: statewide, independent 501 ( C) (3) organization, successor to Annenberg Challenge since 2001, focused on school-based leadership development and with business Board membership
